Tory Meddling Risks Undermining Deal On Upton Toilets

12.44.34pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 4th Sep 2006

West Worcestershire Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, Richard Burt, attended and spoke at a rally organised by Conservatives against the closure of toilets in Upton upon Severn on Saturday.

Mr Burt told the audience that everyone wanted to see decent, refurbished toilets re-opened in the centre of Upton, but said it was regrettable that the Tories insisted on inflaming public opinion whilst negotiations were taking place between the district and town councils.

"Conservatives have chosen to raise the temperature again over this issue when people in the town have already made their views clear" said Richard.

"Whipping up peoples' feelings might suit their own political ends, but it will not help negotiations to get the toilets opened again. Any solution will require a bit of give and take on both sides.

"The Conservatives have never accepted their own responsibility for undermining the original negotiations to refurbish the toilets. Now their politicking could make it even more difficult to reach a deal so that the toilets can be re-opened."
