Richard Burt: Your Local Champion

Candidate Joins Residents In 'Banish The Bag' Action Day

1.46.00pm GMT Sat 26th Jan 2008

Malvern's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate has responded to local calls for action on disposable plastic bags by organising an action day in Barnards Green next Saturday (2nd February).

Mr Burt, who was contacted by local residents, Veronica and Richard Edwards from Moorlands Road, will now produce an information sheet on the benefits of re-useable bags for local traders. He will join volunteers to talk to traders and shoppers, hoping to encourage as many as possible to banish the bag in Barnards Green.

After a meeting with Mrs and Mrs Edwards, Richard Burt said: "There is a really strong desire to do something about the menace of disposable plastic bags in Malvern. Local groups and individuals are already taking action, following in the footsteps of an increasing number of towns and cities that have now banished the plastic bag.

"As well as encouraging residents to take their own re-useable bags when they go shopping, we need to persuade traders of the benefits of switching to packaging like the old fashioned brown paper bag, and also to offer re-useable alternatives to flimsy plastic shopping bags.

"We will be meeting at 10.30am on the car park at the corner of Barnards Green Road and Geraldine Road, and would welcome anyone who'd like to spend an hour to help promote the campaign."
