A boycott of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games by EU Heads of State should be considered, if there is no resumption of dialogue between the Chinese authorities and HH the Dalai Lama, according to a resolution adopted today by the European Parliament. Nevertheless, MEPs agree with the Dalai Lama that the Games themselves remain a great opportunity for freedom for all Chinese people. EU-WIDE CHILD ALERT SYSTEM NEEDED SAYS MEP. Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne has called for a public warning system for when children are suspected of being abducted, saying such a system might have helped in recent high profile cases. Such a system already exists in the US, where it has helped recover almost 400 children during the last five years. Wed 9th Apr 2008: JOIN FORCES TO FIGHT CANCER, MEPs URGE. More funding, better awareness and better sharing of best practice and research are needed to take the fight against cancer to the next level, according to a Liberal Democrat MEP. Tue 8th Apr 2008: EURO-MP URGES TAX CUTS ON HEARING AIDS. Local Euro-MP Liz Lynne has written to Disabilities Minister Anne McGuire, urging her to look into a cut in VAT on devices which help with medical conditions and disabilities. The move was prompted by recent confirmation from the EU Commission that Member States could reduce VAT on vital aids for disabled people to just 5%. The approval of an injection by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence should mean that thousands of older people with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) will receive vital sight-saving treatment on the NHS. Local Euro-MP Liz Lynne has reacted to the release today of the list of post offices earmarked for consultation on closure in Staffordshire and Shropshire. The consultation programme is part of the government's wider post office closures plan and could see many of the 53 listed close along with up to 2500 nationwide. MEPS WELCOME EUROPEAN COMMISSION'S PLANS FOR NEW ANTI-DISCRIMINATION DIRECTIVE . The European Parliament's Employment and Social Affairs Committee today backed plans by the European Commission to bring forward a horizontal directive to extend anti-discrimination laws in access to goods and services to cover all areas presently excluded including disability, age, sexual orientation and religion. Tue 1st Apr 2008: MEP SUPPORT FOR KASHMIR PEACE EFFORTS. The India-Pakistan dialogue must be supported, but peace will only come to Kashmir if the Kashmiris themselves are more involved, according to speakers at the Global Discourse on Kashmir 2008, being held at the European Parliament in Brussels this week. Mon 31st Mar 2008: EU CONSIDERING SEAL HUNT SANCTIONS AGAINST CANADA. The European Commission is considering an EU-wide ban on Canadian seal products in protest at the inhumane methods of killing used in the annual Canadian seal hunt, which was due to start late last week.
